Road trip to Lauterbrunnen

After sleeping in past breakfast (jet lag set in), we decided to grab some lunch at the hotel before making our way to Lauterbrunnen. Lauterbrunnen village is situated in one of the most impressive valleys in the Alps, between rock faces and snow-covered mountain peaks. There are many, many waterfalls and it made for one of the most picturesque leisurely walks we’ve ever taken.

We had about an hour and a half’s drive. We stopped once for a bathroom break and Sebastian and I took a crazy long slide down a hill. The playgrounds here sure are more thrilling by what we’ve seen so far.

MIra is a big J.R.R. Tolkien fan and read about how he was inspired by his visit to this valley. Tolkien traveled to this area in 1911. “The hobbit’s (Bilbo’s) journey from Rivendell to the other side of the Misty Mountains, including the glissade down the slithering stones into the pine woods, is based on my adventures in 1911,” he wrote. Tolkien continued, “We went on foot, carrying great packs, practically all the way from Interlaken, mainly by mountain paths, to Lauterbrunnen and so to Mürren…”

So we went on foot, without great packs, and just a short while (due to our late afternoon start) but what we saw was lovely.

Documented the drive out there as well.

He made it! One of the most thrilling park slides we’ve been down.

Now a few pictures along the drive…

Lauterbrunnen pictures below.

It doesn’t really get more Swiss than this: waterfalls, Alps in the distance, and stuck admist the milking cows as they were being led to their milking barn.
The cow procession to their barn from the other side of the road.
